The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) require the upgrade of Marrangaroo Campground. MTS Heritage was engaged to prepare an Aboriginal Due Diligence Assessment to determine if the upgrade would harm known or potential Aboriginal site or objects. Archaeological survey of the campground and adjacent hill slopes identified 7 Aboriginal artefacts scatters on unformed vehicle tracks, with 59 Aboriginal stone artefacts recorded. Artefacts were predominately chert and included flakes, cores, hammerstones, scrappers, blades and flake debitage. Based on the assessment and consultation with Mingaan Wiradjuri Aboriginal Corporation, it was recommended that NPWS apply for an Aboriginal Heritage Impact Permit to collect Aboriginal objects and sites on vehicle tracks to avoid further damage. Further archaeological excavation on alluvial flats was also recommended and would require the preparation of an Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Assessment in accordance with the Code of Practice for Archaeological Investigation of Aboriginal Objects in New South Wales and consultation with the local Aboriginal community in accordance with Heritage NSW guidelines.

Responsibilities included: Review of the environmental context, ethnohistory and previous archaeological investigations. Assessment of the landform and its potential for Aboriginal sites and objects. Archaeological Survey. Preparation of an Aboriginal Due Diligence Assessment in accordance with the Due Diligence Code of Practice for the Projection of Aboriginal Objects in New South Wales to inform a Review of Environmental Factors (REF) for the project.
